The Lake Havasu Symphonic Winds was founded as an adult community band in 1998 by Wes Humphrey who at the time was the newly retired Band Director at Lake Havasu High School. The group began rehearsing once every week on Thursdays at the the high school band room, and gave their first performance during the Spring of 1999 The band soon evolved into the "wind ensemble concert band" as we know it today.
Soon after, to help manage and to organize the Band’s day-to-day activities, a Board of Directors was created comprised of both band members and members of the community. The Board meets monthly and continues to this day as the Band’s behind-the-scenes support team.
Although the Winds was designed to be an adult Band, very often musicians from the High School band program would be asked to participate. That participation proved to be very beneficial for all, as quite often those young students would receive scholarships from the Winds to foster their ongoing career in music. The Band still remains inclusive, with the age span of our musicians being between 16 to 90 and from all walks of life!
Through the years the Symphonic Winds has performed a minimum of two concerts a year, and as many as eight. the first concerts were predominately classical military band arrangements, but as Havasu's musical tastes have changed, so has the repertoire. Now, audiences enjoy concerts designed around seasonal themes, such as Haloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and so on.. and the style of music is tailored to suit the preferences of our audience. From the Big Band sound to Broadway, classical to Pop we try very hard to make every performance a memorable experience. While the home venue for the Winds is the Performing Arts Center at Lake Havasu High School, the Winds have also provided outreach to the community by performing at local events. These include, A Taste of Havasu, the London Bridge Beach Stage, the Refuge, and Windsor Park among others. We also enjoy performing with our “musical cousins” The Lake Havasu Regional Orchestra and the Community Choir. Numerous guests conductors and musicians have performed with the Winds, including local vocalists Staci Wells, Steve Wayman, Nick deMauro and Jason Fallis, to name just a few. We also enjoy featuring solo performances and even playing special arrangements performed and written by some of our talented members.
The winds is currently considering Laughlin Nevada, Bullhead City Arizona, and Parker Arizona for future concerts.
